Hints and information on how to efficiently navigate Johannesburg, South Africa.
Note: The information is subject to change.
Johannesburg, South Africa is served by the Johannesburg International Airport (JNB) . As much as you may think that Jo'burg (as it is affectionally called) is the capital of South Aftrica, it is not; the capital is Pretoria. Here is some information on
how to get to downtown and the surrounding areas from the airport:
One the arrivals level of either the domestic or international terminals, make a right and continue walking until you past the end of the terminal. Go under the overpass and continue until you see a street on your right. You will see minibuses here. Board any bus for Kempton Park. The cost is 3 Rands. The journey time is abour 5 minutes. From Kempton Park, you can get to anywhere you need to on another minibus. To get to downtown Jo'burg, the cost is 6 Rand. The journey time is 45 minutes.
- There is no airline employee discount on the minibuses.
- Unless you know where you are going, it is recommended that you take a taxi shuttle, naturally it is more expensive, but you can negotiate your price, somewhat. Just follow the airport signs to the taxi shuttle. Please ensure that you only take licensed taxi shuttles.
- If you made arrangements with your hotel for pickup (recommended), then follow the signs to the hotel shuttle.
- There are three major hotels at the airport. They are all under the Six Continents brand: one Intercontinental and two Holiday Inns.
- The Intercontinental which is a two-minute walk from either terminals, has a day Spa for 100 Rands. You get to use the shower, the steam room, the pool, the workout room and a hospitally suite. This is all located on the 8th floor (the top floor). You have a view of the airport as well as the surrounding areas.
