Non-Rev Travel Guide: 150+ Ways To Get Between Europe And The U.S., Canada and Mexico

Getting home to the U.S. from Europe can be pretty daunting especially during the busy summer Holiday season. So I’ve compiled a comprehensive Guide on how to make it home from Europe by looking at the airlines serving the U.S. from the different European airports.

You may have to be quite creative and sometimes you may have to buy a ticket if your airline don’t have an agreement. If you decide to buy a ticket, please do your search at my partner
Momondo. I earn a small commission if you use this service.

I have noticed that WestJet (WS) has a lot of flights from Europe now especially the closer countries like Ireland and the United Kingdom. Lots of flights get to Halifax, NS (YHZ). From there you can take WestJet again onwards or Air Canada (AC).

I always things that at least you’re on the U.S. side of the Atlantic which is much closer than waiting 24 hours for the next flight and then finding out you did not make it. I also have a rule that I don’t second guess my decision and I ever go back and look to see if I would have gotten on the flight. I suggest you do the same.

This post will also look at how to get between the airports in Europe themselves so you can make that connection back to the U.S. The Airport Schedules page is very useful for this task.

Note that some of these flights are not daily and you have to ensure you have an agreement with the airlines in order to fly space available. Also, depending on the agreement, you’ll have to get a ticket before you leave the U.S. So plan a head for alternate routings.

Use the flight schedule program to the right of this post to help you with routings.

Additional Information

Currency

Primarily the Euro (EUR) is used. Here are the exception countries:

  • Albania – Albanian Lek (ALL)
  • Czech korna (CZK)
  • Denmark – Danish krone (DKK)
  • Norway – Norwegian krone (NOK)
  • Polish zloty (PLN)
  • Serbia – Serbian dinar (RSD)
  • Sweden – Swedish Krona (SEK)
  • Switzerland – Swiss franc (CHF)
  • Turkey – Turkish lira (TRY)
  • United Kingdom – British Pound (GBP)

Language

There are various languages including English, spoken in the European continent.

Visa Information

As a U.S. citizen, no visa is required for most of the countries in Europe. Just ensure that you have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and has at least two blank pages. The U.S. State Department has excellent information.

Citizens of other countries should check with their consulates for visa and health requirements. Use this link to check visa requirements.

Hotels

Most of the airports will have hotels available either at the airport itself or close by. Europe is a little different as you may have to pay a special fee for the hotel shuttle. be sure to ask about that before making a booking. It’s usually listed on the hotel’s Web site.

Start your search with our partner HotelsCombined by using the search box below. If you don’t like this partner, then you can try Booking.com or Agoda as well:

Transportation

Europe is quite good about getting around especially from airport to airport. You can take:

A low cost carrier

There are many within Europe. Note that last minute fares on these carriers are usually the same as on the full service ones. Check with your airline to see if you have pass travel benefits. You may have to buy the passes before you leave your home town.

The train

Each country has its own type of train service. They usually have service to the trains stations in other cities as well as the city center.

A bus

Lots of bus services in Europe. I like Flix Bus as they have Wifi, go a lot of places and are quite comfortable.

Bla Bla Car

this is a ride sharing service

Uber

Use the App on your phone. Note Uber is not available every place in Europe

Things To Do

In case you have to overnight somewhere in order to make an early connection. I have some links below to help for a few of the cities that I’ve visited.

Fiumicino, Italy
