Gates of the Mountain
In September 2019, I was invited by the Southwest Montana Tourism Board to explore the region. One of the places we visited was The Gates of the Mountains just north of the state’s capital of Helena, MT. Check out this review of the attraction.
Here is a video of our drive from the highway down to the lake where we boarded our tour boat. Plus some photos of the beautiful area.

Where Is It Located?
The Gates of the Mountains is about a 20 minutes drive north of the capital city of Helena. It sits on the mighty Missouri River.
What To Do
Take the boat tour down the river. The mountains are very tall and tower above you. The Guides are very knowledgeable, so you will learn a lot about the region. The unique thing is the our driver turned the boat around so everyone can get a good view of what he is talking about.
If you’re lucky you’ll see some wildlife, birds and even cows as you go down the river as well as speedboats; lots of speed boats.
There are places you can camp along the river as well. Just ask at the front desk when you get your ticket.
Where To Stay
Helena is a good place to stay as you are so close to the state’s capital city.
I stayed at the Best Western right in the heart of the city and was quite happy with it all.
