The Country
How to get to Japan starts with choosing your Tokyo airport — because the two serving the capital are not interchangeable, and which one you fly into depends entirely on which airline and city you’re coming from. Japan is an archipelago of nearly 7,000 islands stretching 3,000km along the Pacific Rim, home to about 125 million people and the world’s third-largest economy. It is the nation that invented the bullet train, perfected the art of hospitality, and operates the planet’s most punctual transit system. Voted the world’s best travel destination by international travelers for multiple consecutive years, it combines 25 UNESCO World Heritage Sites with the most Michelin-starred restaurants of any city on Earth. US and Canadian citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days — no advance application needed, just a valid passport. Getting around once you arrive is genuinely easy: comprehensive English signage at airports and stations, IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) that work on virtually every urban transit system, and a Shinkansen network that connects the entire country in hours.

Why Go

Kyoto — Japan’s Cultural Capital
Filled with both UNESCO World Heritage Sites and National Important Cultural Properties — temples, shrines, and the villas of shoguns. The seat of the emperor for over 1,000 years. The Fushimi Inari shrine gates, Gion geisha district, and the Golden Pavilion are among the most visited sites in Japan.

Tokyo — World’s Greatest City
The world’s most populous metropolitan area and a perennial vote-getter for best travel destination. Ancient Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, the Shibuya crossing, Tsukiji’s outer market, and more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city on Earth — all within one of the safest, most navigable cities in the world.

Mt. Fuji & Natural Japan
Japan’s most recognizable national symbol — a UNESCO World Heritage Site visible from Tokyo on a clear day. The country’s 25 UNESCO sites also include Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the sacred Itsukushima shrine with its floating torii gate, and Yakushima island’s ancient cedar forests, some over 1,000 years old.

The Shinkansen Network
Japan gave the world the bullet train — and the network remains the most elegant way to travel the country. Tokyo to Kyoto in 2h15m, Tokyo to Osaka in 2h30m, Tokyo to Hiroshima in 4 hours. The JR Pass (available to foreign visitors) covers most lines and makes multi-city itineraries genuinely affordable.

Main Cities & Airports

City Airport Code
Tokyo · main international hub Tokyo Narita International Airport NRT
Tokyo · closer to city centre, growing international Tokyo Haneda International Airport HND
Osaka · gateway to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara Kansai International Airport KIX
Nagoya · central Japan gateway Chubu Centrair International Airport NGO
Sapporo / Hokkaido · northern Japan New Chitose Airport CTS
Fukuoka · Kyushu gateway, intra-Asia hub Fukuoka Airport FUK

Both Tokyo airports have direct rail links to the city centre. Haneda (HND) is about 35 minutes from central Tokyo on the Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu Line. Narita (NRT) is 60–90 minutes via the Narita Express (N’EX) or the Keisei Skyliner.

✈️

Home Airlines

Star AllianceAll Nippon Airways (ANA / NH) — Japan’s largest airline by passengers, Star Alliance, hubbed at both NRT and HND. Extensive North American network including JFK, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, and Houston.
OneworldJapan Airlines (JAL / JL) — Japan’s flag carrier, Oneworld, hubbed at both NRT and HND. Broad North American coverage including JFK, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver.

🗺️

How to Get to Japan From North America

JFK flies to Haneda (HND) only — not Narita. If you’re coming from New York-JFK, all three airlines (ANA, JAL, American) fly to HND. There are no JFK→NRT nonstops in the current schedule. Plan your Tokyo airport accordingly — HND is also closer to central Tokyo (35 min vs 60–90 min for NRT).

KIX is the smart gateway if your destination is Kyoto, Nara, or Osaka — you arrive directly into the Kansai region and skip the Tokyo-to-Kansai Shinkansen leg entirely. Kyoto is 75 minutes by Haruka Express from KIX; Osaka is 30 minutes.

🇺🇸San Francisco SFO United Airlines (UA)

Flying directly into CTS puts you in Hokkaido for skiing (Niseko, Furano), seafood, and Sapporo’s Snow Festival without a Tokyo connection. Most other North American cities reach CTS via NRT or HND with a 1.5-hour domestic hop.

NGO (Nagoya Centrair): Japan Airlines (JL) flies Honolulu (HNL) to NGO; United operates Guam (GUM) to NGO. No continental North American nonstops. Best reached via NRT or HND with an ANA or JAL domestic connection.
FUK (Fukuoka): No North American nonstops. Fukuoka is Japan’s gateway to Southeast Asia — Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, and Korean carriers provide excellent connections for positioning via Seoul (ICN) or Singapore (SIN). Reach Fukuoka from Tokyo in 5 hours on the Shinkansen or 1h40m by domestic flight.
🌺 Pacific Positioning Points — Honolulu & Guam
Honolulu (HNL)One of the best positioning points in the Pacific for non-revs. ANA (NH), JAL (JL), Delta (DL), and Alaska (AS) all fly HNL to Tokyo Haneda (HND). JAL also flies HNL to Osaka (KIX) and Nagoya (NGO). If you can’t get a direct mainland-to-Japan flight, positioning to HNL first opens significantly more options.
Guam (GUM)US territory — no passport needed, US dollar currency, TSA screening. United Airlines serves both NRT and HND from Guam. A useful positioning point for West Coast and Pacific-based employees, especially for routes where mainland-to-Japan loads are tight.

Getting Around Japan

Japan is one of the easiest countries in the world to navigate as a foreign visitor. English signage is near-universal at airports, train stations, and tourist sites. The IC card system (Suica or Pasmo) works on virtually every urban rail, subway, and bus line across the country — tap to ride, no ticket needed. For longer journeys, the Shinkansen bullet train network is the definitive way to travel between cities.

🚅 Shinkansen — Key Routes from Tokyo
Tokyo → Kyoto
~2h15m
Hikari Shinkansen, stopping at Kyoto Station — direct access to the cultural capital without a single transfer.
Tokyo → Osaka
~2h30m
Nozomi Shinkansen (fastest). Osaka is Japan’s food capital and the gateway to Nara and Hiroshima.
Tokyo → Hiroshima
~4h
Nozomi Shinkansen. Day trip possible; Peace Memorial Museum and the floating torii of Miyajima island are nearby.
Tokyo → Fukuoka (Hakata)
~5h
Nozomi Shinkansen to Hakata Station — center of Fukuoka’s food and nightlife scene, and a hub for onward travel to Kyushu.
Tokyo → Sapporo / Hokkaido
~1h40m (fly)
No fast Shinkansen to Sapporo yet — domestic flights from HND or NRT to CTS are the practical option. ANA and JAL both operate frequent routes.

The JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass) gives foreign visitors unlimited travel on most JR lines including the Shinkansen for a set number of days — worth it for multi-city itineraries. Purchase before arriving in Japan through authorized resellers. Also useful: domestic flights on ANA and JAL connect major cities not on the Shinkansen network with minimal check-in friction.

❓

Common Questions

Do I need a visa to visit Japan from the US?

No. US citizens can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism and short-term business. No advance application, no fees — just a valid passport for the duration of your stay. Japan does not require the standard 6-month passport validity rule, though check with your airline as they may have their own policy. Visit Japan Web (pre-registration for customs and immigration) is optional but can speed up arrival processing.

What’s the difference between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Tokyo Haneda (HND)?

Both serve Tokyo but are different airports serving different routes. NRT is the main long-haul hub and handles most North American traffic. HND is closer to central Tokyo (35 min vs 60–90 min by train) and has been adding international routes rapidly — it’s now the only Tokyo airport with JFK service. Delta operates exclusively from HND, while ANA and JAL serve both. If you’re flying from JFK, Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, or Washington-Dulles, you’re going to HND. Most other North American cities can use either airport depending on airline.

Is it easy to get around Japan as a foreign visitor?

Genuinely yes — Japan is one of the most navigable countries in the world for non-Japanese speakers. English signage is widespread at all major airports, Shinkansen stations, and tourist areas. The IC card system (Suica or Pasmo) eliminates the need to buy individual train tickets. Google Maps works reliably for transit navigation throughout the country.
