If you’ve read my earlier piece, Tobago, The Forgotten Paradise, you already know how I feel about this island. It’s real, it’s warm, and it hasn’t been swallowed up by the kind of resort tourism that strips a place of its personality. On my most recent visit, at the recommendation of my college buddy, I stayed at Miller’s Guest House in Buccoo — and it reinforced everything I love about traveling off the beaten path.
How To Get To Tobago
Before we talk about the property, let’s get you there first.
By Air. The main gateway is A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB), located at Crown Point in the southern part of the island. Caribbean Airlines (BW) operates the short inter-island hop from Port of Spain, Trinidad (POS), the main island in this twin-island country — about 20 minutes in the air. If you’re coming from further afield, Caribbean Airlines flies nonstop from New York-JFK seasonally, and also with connections via Barbados (BGI) on Caribbean Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. There may be other service at different times of the year. Be sure to check the flight schedules. The inter-island flights fill up fast and are cheap, so if you’re non-revving, just buy a ticket. Give yourself extra time as the flights may be delayed.
By Ferry is an option if you’re coming from Trinidad. The T&T ferries sail from downtown Port of Spain to downtown Scarborough, the capital of Tobago, accommodating both passengers and vehicles. The crossing takes about 3.5 hours. Book ahead at ttitferry.com — especially around public holidays and Easter, when availability disappears fast. You will have to get transportation from the airport to the ferry.
✈️ Tip for Airline Employees: Check your loads early. During peak periods like Easter, both flights and the ferry fill up quickly. Plan ahead and have a backup date in mind. Check schedules on Passrider.
Getting From The Airport To Buccoo
Once you land at Tobago (TAB), Buccoo is roughly a 10–15 minute drive — a straight shot northwest along the coast.
- Taxi: Available right outside arrivals. Agree on a fare before you get in — most are unmetered.
- Arrange pickup through the property: The smoothest option. Miller’s owner is hands-on and responsive — email or call ahead, and he can arrange or recommend transportation. Contact: office@millersguesthouse.com or (868) 772-5609.
A friend picked me up on this trip, but if I were advising a first-timer, I’d say contact the owner in advance. It removes the guesswork right off the bat.
Miller’s Guest House — The Review
Miller’s Guest House
📍 14 Miller Street, Buccoo, Tobago, TT
Total paid (incl. 2.9% processing + iron fee): ~$200.08 USD
Buccoo is the real deal — a quiet, working fishing village, not a manicured resort zone. The property sits right by the waterfront, where local fishermen bring in their daily catch, clean the fish dockside, and sell it on the spot. It’s one of those vivid, genuine travel moments you simply don’t get at an all-inclusive. A few local shops nearby cover essentials, and one of them does a really solid breakfast.

Buccoo Fishermen, Tobago
Basic — clean and functional with what you need. If you’re expecting boutique hotel finishes, recalibrate. If you’re expecting solid value and authentic Caribbean hospitality, you’ll be happy. The 3/5 is honest, not a knock — the room is priced accordingly and does what it says on the tin.

Miller’s Guest House Room

The on-site restaurant is the biggest surprise of the stay — and probably the best reason to choose this property. The food is genuinely good, and the proximity to that waterfront fishing scene is no coincidence. Fresh doesn’t quite cover it. Half a star off only because the menu is small, but what they do, they do very well.

Miller’s Guest House Restaurant Buccoo Tobago
Miller’s is locally owned and the owner is on-site. That matters more than people realize. When the owner is present and genuinely invested, the character of a place changes. He’s friendly, attentive, and this is the kind of hospitality that big chains simply can’t manufacture.

WiFi is complimentary throughout the property — a genuine plus. Where things dipped slightly was the iron situation (see below). The basics are covered, but don’t arrive expecting extras.
At approximately $200 USD total for two nights — inclusive of the 2.9% online processing fee — the value is strong for a waterfront location with a great restaurant and genuine local hospitality. The room is basic, but the price reflects that honestly.
I needed to iron clothes for an event. The property charges a usage fee of $15 TTD (approximately $2 USD) for the iron and ironing board. It’s not about the amount — it’s just odd and unexpected. Like, I have no idea why the charge is separate. When you’re a guest getting ready for an event, the last thing you want to negotiate is an iron :-). A complimentary iron, or at least upfront disclosure (maybe I missed it :-)), would go a long way. That said, once I knew the fee, I paid it, moved on, and enjoyed the rest of my stay.

Pro tip: pack a small travel steamer. Problem solved before it starts.
The Verdict
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 / 5
Miller’s Guest House hits what matters most: good food, a great location, an engaged owner, and genuine neighborhood character you won’t find in a resort. For the price, the value is strong.

Scenic spot a short walk from the property
Who is this for? Travelers who want to experience real Tobago life — not a buffed-up tourist version of it. Solo travelers, couples, and small groups who prioritize authenticity over amenities.
Safety & Security
🔒 Secured Property: Miller’s Guest House is accessed via a coded security gate. You’ll receive the gate code at some point before check-in — a small but reassuring detail, particularly welcome for solo travelers and first-time visitors to the area.
Buccoo is a quiet, residential fishing village and generally feels very safe. As with any travel destination, standard common-sense precautions apply — keep valuables secured, be aware of your surroundings at night, and check the latest travel advisory from your government before departure. The secured entry at Miller’s adds a useful layer of peace of mind without making the place feel fortress-like. It still has all the warmth of a locally-run guesthouse.
