Morocco
How to get to Morocco starts with understanding that Casablanca (CMN) is your hub, not your destination. The vast majority of intercontinental routes land at Mohamed V International Airport — Morocco’s main gateway and the hub of Royal Air Maroc (AT), a Oneworld member. From Casablanca, every other destination in Morocco is within reach by train, bus, or domestic flight in under five hours. For non-revs, Morocco works well from two angles: direct service from a handful of US cities on Royal Air Maroc and Delta, or — the more flexible and often more reliable approach — positioning through a European hub and catching one of the dozens of daily frequencies into Casablanca or Marrakech. Madrid, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Lisbon, and Istanbul all have strong onward connections. US citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Morocco uses the dirham (MAD), which is not freely convertible — exchange currency at the airport or in-country. Note: the capital is Rabat, not Casablanca, though CMN is the primary international gateway.

Morocco sits just 14km from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. Every major European hub has multiple daily flights into Morocco, operated by alliance carriers. For non-revs who can’t access the CMN/RAK nonstops, this is the most reliable route: position to a European hub first, then continue into Morocco on alliance metal. Here are the best options:
Getting Around Morocco
Morocco has one of the best rail networks in Africa, a comprehensive long-distance bus system, and the continent’s first high-speed train. Once in Morocco, getting between cities is easier than most travelers expect.
~2h 10m
Al Boraq high-speed service, Africa’s first HSR, launched 2018. See oncf.ma for booking. Dramatically changes the math on the Spain-to-Morocco ferry routing.
~35min
Express Al Boraq or standard ONCF — one of the most frequent rail corridors in Africa. Visit oncf.ma for timetables and tickets.
~3h
ONCF standard service. Comfortable, air-conditioned, well worth taking over the road. Timetables at oncf.ma.
~4h 45m
ONCF via Meknès. The train passes through some of the most scenic Moroccan countryside. Timetables at oncf.ma.
Non-revs who position to Madrid (MAD) on Iberia or British Airways can continue to Tangier by taking the ferry from Tarifa (35 min) or Algeciras (70 min) on Spain’s southern coast. Bus connections from Madrid to Algeciras are available, or rent a car for the scenic drive through Andalucía. This routing — fly to Madrid, drive or bus south, ferry to Tangier, board the Al Boraq to Casablanca — is genuinely practical and opens Morocco even when CMN and RAK loads look difficult. Tangier has its own airport (TNG) served by Iberia, Air France, British Airways, and Royal Air Maroc from multiple European cities.
Royal Air Maroc domestic flights connect Casablanca (CMN) to Marrakech, Agadir, Fez, Tangier, Ouarzazate, Laâyoune, and other secondary cities — useful for reaching destinations not on the rail network. As a Oneworld carrier, Oneworld employees with non-rev access can use RAM domestic service the same way they’d use any other Oneworld carrier’s domestic routes.
CTM buses cover most of Morocco including the routes to the Sahara (Merzouga) and the south that are beyond the rail network. The bus from Marrakech to Merzouga takes approximately 10 hours — a longer commitment but entirely viable for travelers with flexible time.
Common Questions
Do US citizens need a visa for Morocco?
No. US citizens can enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. No advance application required — just a valid passport. Canadian citizens also enter visa-free. Always verify current requirements at iatatravelcentre.com before travel.
Is Royal Air Maroc in an alliance?
Yes — Royal Air Maroc joined Oneworld in April 2020. This means Oneworld employees (American, British Airways, Iberia, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Finnair, Qatar Airways, Alaska, and others) have reciprocal non-rev access to RAM metal. Verify your specific airline’s agreements through your travel portal, but RAM’s Oneworld membership makes it genuinely accessible for a large group of non-rev travelers.
Should I fly to Casablanca (CMN) or Marrakech (RAK)?
For most non-revs, CMN is the better choice: more flights, more carriers, more routing options, and Royal Air Maroc’s entire North American network. CMN is also the hub for domestic connections to any other Moroccan city. RAK makes sense if you’re going directly to Marrakech, your airline flies there nonstop (Delta from ATL, United from EWR), and the loads look favorable. If loads on both CMN and RAK are heavy, use the European positioning strategy — Paris, Madrid, or London will almost always give you an onward option.
Is the Moroccan dirham easy to access?
The dirham (MAD) is a controlled currency — it cannot be legally exported from Morocco or exchanged outside the country in most cases. Exchange at the airport on arrival, at banks, or at official exchange bureaus (bureaux de change) in the medinas. ATMs are widely available in Casablanca, Marrakech, Fez, and Agadir and dispense dirhams. Credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, but cash is essential in souks and smaller towns.
