The Country
How to get to Nigeria has a non-rev answer most airline employees don’t know: three US carriers fly nonstop to Lagos on alliance metal. Delta Air Lines (SkyTeam) operates nonstops from both Atlanta (ATL) and New York-JFK to Murtala Muhammed International (LOS), and United Airlines (Star Alliance) flies nonstop from Washington-Dulles (IAD). That’s more direct US access than most African destinations have. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country — approximately 225 million people — and Lagos is its commercial capital, home to the largest economy on the continent. Abuja, the purpose-built federal capital, is served by Turkish Airlines (Star Alliance), Lufthansa (Star Alliance), British Airways (Oneworld), Qatar Airways (Oneworld), and Air France (SkyTeam), among others. No Nigerian carrier is currently in a global alliance — Air Peace and Arik Air both operate extensively domestically and regionally but must be verified separately for interline access. US citizens require a visa for Nigeria; the Nigerian e-Visa is available online and should be obtained before travel. Check travel advisories before departure.

Why Go

Lagos — Africa’s Megacity
Lagos is one of the fastest-growing cities on earth — a metropolitan area of 15 to 20 million people spread across the Lagos Lagoon, with neighborhoods ranging from the hyper-dense mainland to the upscale Victoria Island and the under-construction Eko Atlantic City being built on land reclaimed from the Atlantic. It is the origin city of Afrobeats, home to Nollywood (Africa’s largest film industry), and host to one of Africa’s most dynamic contemporary art scenes. The food — suya, jollof rice, egusi, puff puff — is worth the trip alone.

Abuja — A Capital Designed From Scratch
Abuja was purpose-built as Nigeria’s federal capital beginning in the 1980s, replacing Lagos for governmental functions. It is dramatically different from Lagos — planned, quieter, and anchored by Aso Rock, the enormous granite monolith that dominates the skyline. The Nigerian National Mosque and National Christian Centre sit within a kilometre of each other, a deliberate statement of the city’s founding intent. Zuma Rock, a 725-metre monolith near the city, is one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in West Africa.

Kano — Ancient Walled City
Kano’s old city — Kofar Mata — has been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years. The ancient dye pits at Kofar Mata, where indigo has been processed in the same earthen vats for centuries, are one of West Africa’s most extraordinary working heritage sites. The Kurmi Market, one of the oldest in sub-Saharan Africa, is a labyrinth of stalls selling leather, textiles, and spices. The Emir of Kano’s palace is still the seat of a functioning traditional emirate. Ethiopian Airlines (Star Alliance) flies nonstop ADD→KAN, making Kano accessible via Addis Ababa.

Calabar & Cross River
Calabar, in southeastern Nigeria on the Cross River estuary, was one of the principal ports of the transatlantic slave trade and later a major British colonial administrative center. Its waterfront colonial architecture and the Slave History Museum at the Duke Town Church make it a significant historical destination. Cross River State is also home to the Cross River National Park, the habitat of the critically endangered Cross River gorilla. Calabar hosts Nigeria’s largest annual festival — Carnival Calabar — each December.

Travel advisory: Review your government’s current travel advisory for Nigeria before booking. The US Department of State issues country-specific advisories that may affect travel to certain regions. Lagos and Abuja have large expatriate communities and established infrastructure for international visitors, but conditions vary by region. Check travel.state.gov for current guidance.

Lagos loads for US-origin non-revs: The Delta ATL→LOS and JFK→LOS routes are among the busiest long-haul US carrier routes into sub-Saharan Africa. The Nigerian diaspora in the US is large — particularly in the Atlanta, Houston, and New York metro areas — and these flights carry significant revenue and leisure demand. Monitor loads at least 3–4 days out. The United IAD→LOS route provides a useful Star Alliance backup when ATL or JFK loads look difficult.

Abuja is the government and diplomatic capital — a cleaner, less congested city than Lagos and a better base for travelers focused on the capital. Position through Istanbul (Turkish, Star Alliance) or Doha (Qatar, Oneworld) from North America for the most direct routing to ABV.

❓

Common Questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Nigeria?

Yes. Nigeria requires a visa for US citizens. The Nigerian e-Visa is available through the Nigeria Immigration Service portal at portal.immigration.gov.ng. Apply well in advance of travel — do not rely on visa on arrival availability. Verify current requirements at iatatravelcentre.com before every trip.

Which US city has the best loads to Lagos?

All three US nonstops — Delta ATL, Delta JFK, and United IAD — serve Lagos on widebody aircraft and can carry heavy diaspora loads, particularly around Nigerian national holidays and during the December–January holiday travel period. SkyTeam employees should compare both Delta gateways (ATL and JFK) since loads can differ significantly between the two. United’s IAD flight provides Star Alliance employees a standalone option — check it independently.

Is there an accessible way to reach Kano or Enugu beyond Lagos?

Yes — Ethiopian Airlines (Star Alliance) flies nonstop from Addis Ababa (ADD) directly to Kano (KAN) and Enugu (ENU), bypassing Lagos entirely. For non-revs whose destination is northern or southeastern Nigeria, the ADD routing on Ethiopian may actually be more practical than flying LOS and connecting domestically. Ethiopian’s ADD hub is well-served from North American cities via its own long-haul network.

Can I use Nigerian airlines as a non-rev?

Air Peace and Arik Air — Nigeria’s two largest carriers — are not in any global alliance. Non-rev access depends entirely on whether your specific airline has an interline agreement with them. Do not assume access based on route availability. Check your airline’s travel portal or contact your employee travel department to confirm before listing.
