The Country
How to get to Senegal starts with an underappreciated fact: Delta Air Lines operates a nonstop from New York-JFK to Dakar’s Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) — one of the only US carrier direct routes into sub-Saharan Africa. For SkyTeam employees, this is a straightforward one-hop non-rev journey from New York. Air France also connects Paris CDG directly to DSS with strong frequency, and Air France being SkyTeam means the Paris route is accessible to the same pool of travelers. For Star Alliance employees, Brussels Airlines (Star Alliance, via BRU), TAP Portugal (via LIS), and Turkish Airlines (via IST) all serve DSS nonstop. Oneworld travelers can route through Iberia (Madrid) or Royal Air Maroc (Casablanca). Senegal’s flag carrier, Air Senegal (HC), operates domestic routes and West African regional service but is not in any global alliance. Dakar is the main gateway — there is one secondary airport, Cap Skirring (CSK) in the Casamance region in the south, served only by Air Senegal from DSS. Most travelers enter through DSS. Senegal’s national airline connects Dakar to West African capitals. The country uses the West African CFA franc (XOF), fixed to the euro at 655.957 XOF per EUR, making it predictable to budget. Senegal is one of West Africa’s most politically stable nations — an important consideration when travel planning in the region.

Why Go
Dakar & Teranga Culture
Dakar sits on the Cap-Vert Peninsula, the westernmost point of the African mainland. It’s a city of intense energy — the Atlantic crashing against the corniche, the markets of Sandaga and Kermel, the live mbalax music pouring from restaurants at midnight. Teranga — the Wolof concept of hospitality and generosity — shapes every interaction. The city’s contemporary art scene, anchored by the biennial Dak’Art, is among the most dynamic in Africa.
Gorée Island
A 15-minute COSIM ferry from Dakar’s port reaches Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically significant places on the continent. The island served as a major hub in the transatlantic slave trade, and the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) stands as a sober memorial. The island itself is car-free, peaceful, and architecturally beautiful — bougainvillea-draped colonial buildings, cannons on the rocks, and a view back across the water toward the Dakar skyline.
Lac Rose & the Saharan Edge
Retba Lake — Lac Rose — sits about 35km northeast of Dakar, where the Atlantic coastline meets the edge of the Sahara. The lake’s extraordinary pink color comes from a high concentration of Dunaliella salga algae, most vivid in the dry season. Salt collectors wade chest-deep in the water to harvest the lake’s mineral deposits, a practice that has continued for centuries. North of Dakar, the Lompoul Desert offers sand dunes and camel rides at the limit of the Sahel.
The Sine-Saloum Delta & Casamance
The Sine-Saloum Delta — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — is a vast labyrinth of mangroves, tidal channels, islands, and baobab forests south of Dakar, best explored by traditional pirogue. The delta supports hundreds of bird species. Further south, the Casamance is a lush, distinct region — geographically separated from the rest of Senegal by the Gambia River — with beaches, rice fields, and a notably different cultural character from the dry north. Cap Skirring on the Casamance coast is the country’s premier beach destination.

Delta JFK→DSS is the non-rev headline for Senegal. It’s one of the only nonstop routes operated by a US carrier into sub-Saharan Africa. SkyTeam employees who can get to JFK have a single-hop path to Dakar. Verify loads at least 2–3 days before — the route operates on widebody equipment and non-rev competition can be meaningful, especially from the Senegalese diaspora communities in New York traveling home. If JFK loads are heavy, the European routing options below open up the full range of alliances.
🌍 European Positioning Strategy — All Three Alliances
For non-revs who can’t access or prefer not to use the Delta JFK direct, every major alliance has at least one solid European hub with nonstop service to DSS. Position to your alliance’s best option in Europe, then connect onward.
🇫🇷 Paris CDGAir France (SkyTeam) — the highest-frequency European route to Dakar, with multiple weekly departures. CDG is reachable from most US cities on Delta or Air France itself. Best SkyTeam path after the Delta JFK direct.
🇧🇪 Brussels BRUBrussels Airlines (Star Alliance) — nonstop to DSS. BRU is reachable from the US on United, Lufthansa, or other Star carriers. Strong option for Star Alliance employees who can position through Belgium.
🇵🇹 Lisbon LISTAP Portugal (Star Alliance) — nonstop LIS→DSS. TAP operates US East Coast routes from JFK, EWR, BOS, MIA, and IAD, giving Star Alliance employees a clean two-hop path: US hub → LIS → DSS.
🇹🇷 Istanbul ISTTurkish Airlines (Star Alliance) — nonstop IST→DSS. Turkish flies to most US hub airports, making IST a viable Star Alliance routing even from the Midwest and Southeast. Longer total journey but reliable.
🇪🇸 Madrid MADIberia (Oneworld) — nonstop MAD→DSS. Madrid is the closest major European hub to Dakar (~2,500km). Best Oneworld path into Senegal — American, British Airways, or Finnair employees can position to MAD and continue on Iberia.
🇮🇹 Rome FCOITA Airways (SkyTeam) — nonstop FCO→DSS. An alternative SkyTeam routing for travelers who find better loads through Rome than Paris.
🇲🇦 Casablanca CMNRoyal Air Maroc (Oneworld) — nonstop CMN→DSS. RAM joined Oneworld in 2020. Travelers already routing through Morocco (see our Morocco guide) can continue south to Dakar on RAM metal.

Senegal’s Airports
| City / Region |
Airport |
Code |
Notes |
| Dakar |
Blaise Diagne International Airport |
DSS |
Opened 2017, replaced the old Léopold Sédar Senghor Airport (DKR). All international service. ~50km east of central Dakar — allow at least 60–90 min from city depending on traffic. |
| Cap Skirring (Casamance) |
Cap Skirring Airport |
CSK |
Secondary airport serving the Casamance beach resort region. Domestic only — Air Senegal flies DSS↔CSK. Only way to fly directly into the Casamance; the overland route requires crossing the Gambia. |
Note on Dakar airport distance: Blaise Diagne (DSS) is significantly further from the city center than the old DKR airport. Budget at least 60 minutes for the transfer in normal traffic — much more during peak hours. Taxis and private transfers are the primary options. Buses also serve the route. This matters for non-revs monitoring loads who need flexibility on departure timing.
🚢
Getting Around Senegal
Gorée Island ferry — COSIM operates the regular ferry service from the Port of Dakar to Gorée Island. The crossing takes approximately 20 minutes and runs multiple times daily. The ferry terminal is at the Embarcadère de Gorée in downtown Dakar. Gorée is car-free — the entire island is walkable in under an hour. Plan a full morning or afternoon to absorb it properly.
Sept-place taxis — the backbone of intercity travel in Senegal. Shared seven-seat Peugeot station wagons depart from gares routières (bus stations) in most major towns when full. Affordable and omnipresent — the genuine Senegalese way to move between cities. The journey from Dakar to Saint-Louis (the old colonial capital, ~280km north) takes about 3–4 hours by sept-place.
The Casamance question — the Casamance region in southern Senegal is geographically separated from the north by the Republic of The Gambia, which cuts across Senegal’s territory. Overland travel requires either crossing through the Gambia (Trans-Gambia Highway, including a river ferry crossing that can involve significant waits) or taking the long coastal road. For most visitors, flying DSS→CSK on Air Senegal is the practical choice. The region itself — lush, forested, and culturally distinct — rewards the extra step.
Lac Rose / Retba — approximately 35km northeast of Dakar, best reached by taxi or organized day trip. No public transport runs directly to the lake. The drive takes about 45 minutes from central Dakar.
Sine-Saloum Delta — the jumping-off point is typically the town of Fatick or Foundiougne, roughly 150km southeast of Dakar. From there, pirogues (traditional wooden boats) are the transport — guided excursions can be arranged locally or through hotels in the delta villages.
❓
Common Questions
Do US citizens need a visa for Senegal?
Entry requirements for Senegal vary and can change. Always verify current requirements at iatatravelcentre.com before travel and confirm with the Senegalese embassy or consulate for the most current rules. A valid passport with sufficient remaining validity is required.
What currency does Senegal use?
The West African CFA franc (XOF), shared with seven other West African nations as part of the UEMOA monetary union. The XOF is fixed to the euro at 655.957 XOF per EUR — a stable, predictable rate. USD cash can be exchanged at banks and bureaux de change in Dakar, but the euro is easier to exchange throughout the country. ATMs dispense XOF in Dakar.
How far is DSS from central Dakar?
Blaise Diagne International Airport is approximately 50km east of central Dakar, near the town of Diass. The drive takes 60–90 minutes under normal conditions but can extend to 2+ hours in peak traffic. This is a meaningful consideration for non-revs who need flexibility around departure windows — build in more buffer than you think you need.
Is the Delta JFK–DSS nonstop reliable for non-revs?
It operates on widebody equipment and is one of the longer transatlantic routes Delta flies. Loads tend to be heavier around Senegalese national holidays and summer months (July–August), when diaspora travel from the US peaks. The European alternatives — Air France CDG, Brussels Airlines BRU, TAP LIS — provide meaningful backup if JFK loads look difficult. Monitor all options 3–4 days before your intended travel date.
