Spirit Airlines Has Shutdown
as Bailout Collapses
Negotiations over a $500 million rescue package have stalled. Operations has ceased at 3:00 a.m. ET Saturday. Here is a complete look at the network that is about to go dark — every route, every hub, every market.

Spirit Airlines has been fighting for survival since filing its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2025. A $500 million government aid package that represented the airline’s last realistic lifeline has collapsed — negotiations broke down after bondholders rejected the terms, and the Trump administration has signaled it will not intervene. Unless something changes in the next few hours, Spirit will cease all operations at 3:00 a.m. ET on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The shutdown is the largest U.S. airline failure in years. What follows is a full accounting of what is about to disappear from the aviation map — Spirit’s complete scheduled network, its workforce, its fleet, and what it means for travelers on the routes it leaves behind.

If you’re holding a Spirit Airlines ticket, here are some options. Also, check the spirit website at https://www.spirit.com as they have some details: Rebook on another carrier as soon as possible; several airlines have historically offered special distressed-passenger fares during industry failures, so call the airline directly or check their websites for details; more than likely you will have to call. Review your travel insurance policy if you have one; airline insolvency may be a covered event under comprehensive plans, and your insurer can walk you through the claims process. Above all, understand that Spirit’s shutdown does not automatically get you on another flight — you will need to purchase a new ticket on a different carrier to complete your travel. No other airline is obligated to honor a Spirit ticket.

From the spirit website:
“We will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. Guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund. Compensation for Guests who booked flights using any other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy court process.”

What Airlines Are Doing To Help

The industry has moved quickly. Here is what each carrier is offering — for passengers, employees, and pilots and flight attendants looking for their next opportunity.

American Airlines
American has set up a dedicated page at aa.com/here-to-help-fares where Spirit ticket holders can book fares on affected routes. They are also assisting displaced Spirit crew members with getting home. For those looking for work, American has a special recruitment page at jobs.aa.com/supportingspirit and has indicated that future job fairs are planned — keep an eye out.
Delta Air Lines
Delta will honor its existing interline agreement for standby travel for Spirit pilots and flight attendants for the next 10 days. Displaced Spirit employees can also visit Delta’s dedicated careers page at delta.avature.net — Spirit Employees.
JetBlue
JetBlue is offering special fares for Spirit customers for a limited time — details at jetblue.com/travel-alerts. Displaced Spirit pilots and flight attendants can fly jumpseat on JetBlue for the next two weeks.
Southwest Airlines
Southwest will assist Spirit revenue customers at the airport and rebook them at special fares as appropriate. They are also offering a status match to their Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program tiers based on your Spirit program level. For employment opportunities, head directly to careers.southwestair.com.
United Airlines
United is offering pass travel on United metal for Spirit employees for the next two weeks — book on ID90. Special fares for Spirit ticket holders are available for the next two weeks at united.com/specialfares. Displaced Spirit employees can also find job information and apply at united.com/SpiritEmployees.

To help you figure out your alternatives, we built a tool that shows every Spirit route and the other airlines that serve the same city pair. The Spirit Route Finder will help you plan accordingly — keep in mind that loads on those alternate flights will be higher than normal as displaced Spirit passengers rebook.

Hub/Focus City-by-Hub/Focus Breakdown

Spirit’s scheduled network spans 353 routes connecting 65 airports across the United States, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) is the undisputed anchor of the operation, accounting for 54 outbound routes — more than any other airport in the network. Orlando (MCO) is second with 32. Together, FLL and MCO handle the overwhelming majority of Spirit’s leisure and international flying.

Houston IAH — 12 Routes Set to Go Dark

Spirit currently operates 12 nonstop routes from Houston Bush Intercontinental: Atlanta, Baltimore, Cancún, Detroit, Newark, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York LaGuardia, Orlando, Miami, and Chicago O’Hare. These are among the most price-competitive routes out of IAH. Expect legacy and Southwest fare adjustments on all 12 within days of a shutdown.

Caribbean & Latin America Routes

Spirit’s international footprint is almost entirely FLL-anchored. The airline serves 24 international destinations, with particular depth in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and the USVI/Puerto Rico corridor. The loss of Spirit on these routes would disproportionately affect budget-conscious travelers from South Florida — Spirit is often the only sub-$150 option to cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena.

What This Means for Standby Travelers

The impact on non-rev travelers is real as stranded customers will buy empty seats on other carriers in order to complete their travels. Frontier and Spirit are usually the fare floor on dozens of routes — particularly leisure markets like South Florida, Las Vegas, Caribbean, and the Colombia corridor. When a ULCC disappears from a market, legacy carriers historically raise base fares within days. For non-rev travelers, revenue fare levels matter: they affect the crowding of flights. Cheap fares fill seats with leisure travelers. With Spirit potentially gone, some of that traffic will shift to legacy carriers — competing directly with non-revs on exactly the routes non-revs want to fly.

If you’re non-revving out of IAH on any of the 12 routes Spirit currently serves, monitor loads closely over the coming days and weeks as the market adjusts. The same applies to any non-rev traveling between the Northeast and Florida, between the Midwest and Las Vegas, or on any route in the Caribbean/South Florida corridor.

Spirit Airlines Shutdown — What You Need to Know

What happens to my Spirit Airlines ticket?
Since Spirit has ceased operations, your ticket is sadly worthless for travel. Spirit is not a partner carrier with other airlines and has no interline agreements that would allow another carrier to honor your booking. You will need to purchase a new ticket on a different airline.

Can I get a refund on my Spirit ticket?
From the spirit website:
“We will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. Guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund. Compensation for Guests who booked flights using any other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy court process.”

Will other airlines offer special fares for Spirit passengers?
Several major airlines are offering what’s called rescue fares for stranded Spirit passengers. Delta Air Lines is offering rescue fares for affected travelers. United Airlines has set up a dedicated rebooking page for Spirit customers. American Airlines has announced support measures for both Spirit passengers and Spirit team members. JetBlue is also posting travel alert information for those affected.

Does travel insurance cover an airline shutdown?
It depends on your policy. Comprehensive travel insurance policies that include “supplier default” or “financial insolvency” coverage typically do cover airline shutdowns. Standard trip cancellation coverage may not. Review your policy documents carefully and contact your insurer directly — they can confirm coverage and guide you through the claims process.

How do I file a credit card chargeback for my Spirit ticket if I don’t receive my refund?
Call the number on the back of your credit card and explain that the merchant (Spirit Airlines) has ceased operations and the service was not rendered. Most major card issuers — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover — have purchase protection that covers this scenario. Act quickly: chargeback windows are typically 60 to 120 days from the transaction date, depending on your card issuer.

What was Spirit Airlines’ main hub?
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) was Spirit’s primary operating hub, accounting for 54 outbound routes — the most of any airport in their network. Orlando (MCO) was the second-largest with 32 outbound routes. Spirit’s headquarters was located in Dania Beach, Florida, adjacent to Fort Lauderdale.

How many employees does Spirit Airlines have?
Spirit had approximately 7,482 active employees at the time of the shutdown, down from a peak of 11,331. The workforce includes pilots, flight attendants, dispatchers, ramp and passenger service agents, and administrative staff. Hundreds of pilots and flight attendants had already been furloughed during Spirit’s 2025 restructuring.

Why did Spirit Airlines shut down?
Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice — first in November 2024 and again in August 2025 — after years of losses, rising fuel costs, heavy debt, and a failed merger with Frontier Airlines. A final attempt to secure a $500 million government rescue package collapsed in late April 2026 when bondholders rejected the terms, leaving the airline without the cash needed to continue operations.

Can non-rev travelers fly on Spirit Airlines?
