Non-Rev Survival Series
Today, let’s talk about the trips that end before they even start — at the check-in counter, because of a £20 document.
Since February 25, 2026, the UK has been strictly enforcing its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). So I need you to pay attention:
What Happens If You Don’t Have a UK ETA? No Boarding. Full Stop.
If you show up for your flight to the UK without an approved ETA, you will not be boarded. Not “might be.” Will not be. Airlines face fines of up to £50,000 per improperly documented passenger, so the agent physically cannot override the system — the automated document check simply blocks you. The UK government’s own phrase for this is “no permission, no travel.”
And as a non-rev, you know what that means. A revenue passenger gets rebooked once they sort it out. You? You’ve lost your listing, the loads have moved, and depending on the day, your trip may just be over. You may be able to apply using the App right away, but it may take up to 3 business days to get approval. But it may be approved in minutes.
The Three Rules That Keep You Off the Sad Side of the Counter
1. Get it before you even check loads. Most approvals come back in minutes through the UK ETA app, but the UK government recommends allowing at least 3 working days for cases that require extra review. As Non-revs, we travel on short notice — which is exactly why the ETA should already be in your passport’s back pocket. It’s valid for 2 years (or until your passport expires), so get it now, while your trip is still just an idea. Do NOT wait until the last minute.
2. Only use the official UK government website or app. Apply through the UK ETA app (App Store / Google Play) or directly at GOV.UK — nowhere else. Link to the App from the government website, do not do a search on your phone in the App program.
It costs £20. Third-party sites will happily charge you double or triple for the same thing, and some are outright scams that take your money and your passport details. If the site isn’t gov.uk, close the tab. There is no ifs, ands, or buts about this.
3. It’s tied to your passport, not to you. Renew your passport? Your ETA dies with the old one — reapply. Every traveler needs their own, including infants. And if you’re a dual British citizen, you can’t get an ETA at all: you must travel on your British passport (or certificate of entitlement), or you’ll be the one denied boarding. Note that some airlines will temporarily allow you to travel on an expired UK passport. You must check with them first to ensure that they will do this.

The Non-Rev Traps Nobody Tells You About
- The overnight roll trap. You’re transiting Heathrow, your onward flight is full, and you’re rolled to tomorrow morning (you may have to ask an agent to do this or list all over again). Want to leave the terminal for a hotel? That means passing through UK border control — no ETA, no exit. You’d be sleeping airside whether you like it or not. And I’m not even sure this is allowed…
- The reroute trap. Currently, you can transit the UK airside without an ETA, except for travel to the Republic of Ireland. If your backup routing sends you through, say, Gatwick or Edinburgh, and you arrive at Heathrow —or anywhere else in the UK— or you’re on separate listings and need to reclaim a bag, you need the ETA. Your Plan B and Plan C routings need to be ETA-proof, not just your Plan A.
- The “I have one” trap. Got a new passport since your last UK trip? Your old ETA is invalid. Check before you list.
What About Europe? EES Is Live — Pad Your Connections
Since April 10, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully running at Schengen borders. First-time registration means fingerprints and a facial scan, and it’s producing 2–4 hour queues at major hubs at peak — with warnings of worse as the summer progresses. For non-revs, that changes the math on tight connections: if your routing requires clearing immigration to relist or recheck, that queue is now part of your minimum connect time. The good news: once you’re registered, subsequent entries are usually a quick face check.
Is ETIAS Live Yet? No — and That Matters
ETIAS is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, and it won’t be mandatory immediately. Anyone selling you an “ETIAS” today is a scam. When it’s real, you’ll get it from the official EU site, and I’ll walk you through it right here. What is ETIAS? It’s a travel authorization for the rest of Europe. Similar to the ESTA document that Europeans need to come to the U.S.
Your Pre-Listing Document Checklist
- UK in your plans (or your backup routings) in the next 2 years? Get the ETA now — official app or GOV.UK only, £20
- Passport valid well beyond your trip — and remember: new passport = new ETA
- Every member of your party has their own ETA, including the little ones
- Dual UK citizen? Travel on your British passport, not your foreign one
- Flying into Schengen? Add EES queue time to your connection and arrival plans
- Ignore every “ETIAS application” site until the EU officially launches it
The canceled-flight game is about reacting fast. The document game is about acting early. Win both, and you’re ahead of 90% of the non-revs at the gate.

UK ETA, EES & ETIAS FAQ
What happens if I arrive at the airport without a UK ETA?
You will be denied boarding — no exceptions. Since February 25, 2026, carriers must verify your ETA before departure, and airlines face fines of up to £50,000 per improperly documented passenger, so agents cannot override the automated document check. As a non-rev, that usually means your listing is lost and your trip may be over for the day.
Do I need a UK ETA to transit the UK?
Currently, you can transit the UK airside without an ETA, except for travel to the Republic of Ireland. If you pass through UK border control — to reclaim a bag, connect on separate listings, or leave the terminal for a hotel after being rolled overnight — you need the ETA. Non-revs should make every backup routing ETA-proof, not just Plan A.
Where should I apply for the UK ETA, and how much does it cost?
Only through the official UK ETA app (App Store / Google Play) or directly at GOV.UK. It costs £20 and is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Third-party websites charge more for the same thing, and some are scams. Most approvals arrive in minutes, but allow up to 3 business days.
Is ETIAS required for Europe right now?
No. ETIAS — Europe’s travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors, similar to the U.S. ESTA — is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 and won’t be mandatory immediately. Anyone selling an “ETIAS” today is a scam. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is live, however, so budget extra time for biometric registration queues at Schengen borders.
