World Cup 2026 travel guide, Day 8 — today all eight countries on the pitch were already covered in Days 1 through 3. Which means this is a chance to go deeper: new aviation angles, fresh personal stories, and the moment where our running no-flag-carrier count hits an uncomfortable seven nations.

TODAY’S MATCHES — DAY 8
🇨🇿 Czechia vs. South Africa 🇿🇦Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta — 12pm ET
🇨🇭 Switzerland vs. Bosnia 🇧🇦SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles — 3pm ET
🇨🇦 Canada vs. Qatar 🇶🇦BC Place, Vancouver — 6pm ET
🇲🇽 Mexico vs. South Korea 🇰🇷Estadio Akron, Guadalajara — 9pm ET

A note on the format today: all eight of these countries appeared in the series earlier — Czechia, South Africa, South Korea, and Mexico on Day 1; Canada and Bosnia on Day 2; Qatar and Switzerland on Day 3. The airlines and routes were covered then. Today I’m going deeper on the angles we didn’t have space for the first time around.

Starting with the one that adds two more nations to the count: the World Cup 2026 no-flag-carrier tracker just hit seven countries.

Day 8 update: 7 World Cup nations without a flag carrier

When we started this series on Day 1 it was a curiosity. By Day 8 it’s a pattern. Czechia and Bosnia both play today — and both arrive without a national airline. Czech Airlines ceased operations in January 2024. Bosnia and Herzegovina Airlines shut down in 2015. That brings the total to seven countries at this tournament flying on someone else’s metal:

  • USA — never had one
  • Paraguay — Paranair exists but is a tiny regional carrier
  • Ecuador — TAME ceased 2020
  • Ivory Coast — Air Côte d’Ivoire operates regionally
  • Ghana — Ghana Airways ceased 2004
  • Czechia — Czech Airlines ceased January 2024
  • Bosnia — B&H Airlines ceased 2015

Seven of the 48 nations at this World Cup. We’re not done — there are more matchdays to go.

🇨🇿 Czechia vs. 🇿🇦 South Africa — Atlanta

CZECHIA — THE NEW ANGLE

Czech Airlines is gone. One of the oldest airlines in the world — founded in 1923 — it ceased commercial operations in January 2024. Prague’s Václav Havel Airport (PRG) is now served by the Czech LCC Smart Wings, plus international carriers. From North America: American Airlines flies Philadelphia nonstop, Delta serves JFK, Air Canada connects Toronto. I have a dedicated Prague page on the site and an Ostrava guide too — Prague is one of my favorite cities anywhere, and Ostrava is worth a full trip of its own. SOUTH AFRICA — THE NEW ANGLE

South African Airways survived its post-COVID restructuring, but it is a fraction of its former self. More striking is what surrounds it: the South African airline graveyard. Comair (flew from Namibia) — which operated British Airways South Africa and Kulula — filed for liquidation in 2022. Mango Airlines suspended operations in 2021. SAExpress shut down in 2020. South Africa has seen more aviation startups, revivals, and collapses in the last decade than almost any other market.

The country was once one of the most interesting in the world for airline watchers, and it still is — just for different reasons. I’ve been there myself: Johannesburg just after the end of apartheid, Soweto, and flew into Cape Town once during cricket season but never left the airport as flights were full and I wouldn’t get back in time for my flight to Atlanta on Delta. Delta still flies Atlanta to Johannesburg (JNB) nonstop — and also to Cape Town (CPT) now. United serves both JNB and CPT from Newark and Washington Dulles. For the full Africa routing picture: nonstop and one-stop airlines from Africa to North America.

One personal story from South Africa I haven’t told yet: I was ready to board my Qatar Airways Boeing 787 in Johannesburg. The agents advised that the incoming flight had a bird strike on the way in — the flight was eventually cancelled — and ended up rerouted the next day onto Lufthansa to Frankfurt. So I missed stopping in Qatar. Sometimes the journey is the story.

🇨🇭 Switzerland vs. 🇧🇦 Bosnia — Los Angeles

SWITZERLAND — THE NEW ANGLE

I covered Swiss Airlines’ massive transatlantic network on Day 3 — it really is one of the most connected carriers in Europe. The angle I didn’t mention: Zurich Airport (ZRH) is one of the world’s great planespotting airports. The Besucherterrasse — the public observation deck — sits directly under the approach path and gives you some of the cleanest views of arriving aircraft you’ll find anywhere. I spent real time there. It’s worth the trip even if you’re not flying anywhere. Swiss flies LAX–ZRH nonstop, putting today’s SoFi Stadium venue within one hop of Zurich for Swiss fans.

BOSNIA — THE NEW ANGLE

No flag carrier — as noted above. Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) is served by Turkish Airlines (IST), Swiss (ZRH), Austrian (VIE), Lufthansa (FRA), LOT Polish (WAW), and Qatar Airways (DOH) — no North America nonstops. The routing for Bosnian fans getting to Los Angeles involves at least two connections.

Here’s the geography angle most people miss: Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) sits just eight miles away from the Bosnia border — it’s practically a Bosnian airport by proximity. When I traveled the region I noticed how compressed the borders are in that part of the Balkans.

I also took the train from Belgrade to Sarajevo on another that trip, which I’d recommend to anyone. Great hospitality in the countryside outside Sarajevo. Inside the city I did have someone follow me around for a while — and separately on the train, a guy tried to jump me, claiming he was selling socks. He was not selling socks. The train station in Sarajevo, though, is genuinely beautiful. It’s worth a visit for the architecture alone.

🇨🇦 Canada vs. 🇶🇦 Qatar — Vancouver

CANADA — THE NEW ANGLE

I’ve covered Air Canada’s network extensively — but the Vancouver angle deserves its own moment. YVR is Air Canada’s Pacific gateway: the hub for routes to Japan, Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. Korean Air and T’way Air both fly Seoul Incheon (ICN) nonstop to Vancouver. For today’s match at BC Place, Korean fans could have flown nonstop. I’ve been to Vancouver several times — it’s one of the most livable cities in Canada, and YVR consistently ranks among the best airports in North America. I’ve also been to Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, and Montreal — Canada is well-traveled for me. Plus there’s the downtown seaplane base.

QATAR — THE NEW ANGLE

Qatar Airways is one of the finest airlines in the world, and I say that having flown their QSuites product on the nonstop from Houston Intercontinental to Doha (IAH–DOH). The lay-flat suite with the closing door is a genuine step above what most carriers offer in business class. On a long haul like that one, it matters. If you ever get the chance to fly QSuites, take it.

I had transited through Doha many times before I actually spent time in the city — the airport is one of the busiest in the world and handles connections from virtually every continent. But August and September are genuinely not the time to visit — 40°C-plus with humidity is not a travel experience, it’s an endurance test. I literally felt my skin heating up. It was strange.

Qatar Airways serves Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL) nonstop from Doha. The Vancouver match doesn’t have a nonstop QR flight, but you can connect via Toronto.

🇲🇽 Mexico vs. 🇰🇷 South Korea — Guadalajara

MEXICO — THE NEW ANGLE

Today’s match is at Estadio Akron in Zapopan, just outside Guadalajara — not Mexico City. GDL (Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International) is Mexico’s second international gateway, well-served by Air Canada from Toronto and Montreal, United from Houston, American from Dallas and Chicago, Delta from Atlanta, and WestJet from Calgary. Aeromexico connects GDL to MEX for onward international connections.

I’ve been to Mexico many times — several states, and once walked across the border at Tijuana and then walked to the Tijuana airport to catch a flight. I also flew LAX–MEX–IAH nonrev once to get home. The Aeromexico–United IAH axis makes Mexico easily reachable from my home airport. United’s IAH hub connects Houston directly to Mexico City.

SOUTH KOREA — THE NEW ANGLE

Korean Air (SkyTeam) and Asiana Airlines (Star Alliance) together make Seoul Incheon (ICN) one of the most comprehensively connected airports in the world. The angle for today: Korean Air flies ICN nonstop to both Prague (PRG) and Zurich (ZRH) — two cities that house the airports of nations playing today in other groups. Korean fans connecting through ICN to any World Cup venue have an extraordinary range of nonstop options.

From North America: Korean Air serves Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York JFK, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, Washington Dulles, Toronto, and Vancouver. Delta, United, American, Alaska, and Air Canada all add further frequency. Seoul also has a second airport — Gimpo (GMP) — which handles domestic routes and some short-haul Asia. All international long-haul goes through ICN. I’ve been to South Korea a few times, sometimes just connecting through — Incheon itself is one of the world’s best transit airports.

The four host cities

Atlanta — Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL). Delta’s mega-hub and the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume. If you’re flying to today’s Czechia vs. South Africa match, ATL is your gateway. Delta flies nonstop to Johannesburg from Atlanta — putting the two countries on the pitch connected by a single flight to the venue city. Atlanta also connects onward to virtually everywhere.

Los Angeles — LAX. One of the world’s great international airports. Swiss flies LAX–Zurich nonstop, making it a clean one-stop for Swiss fans. Bosnian fans face a longer routing — Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, or Austrian via Vienna, or Lufthansa via Frankfurt, then onward to LA. BMO Field in Toronto hosts the Ghana-Panama match today as well, but that’s a separate fixture — the Bosnia connection to LA via Sarajevo is the interesting aviation story.

Vancouver — YVR. Air Canada’s Pacific gateway. Korean Air ICN–YVR nonstop means Korean fans can reach today’s match with a single flight if coming from Seoul. Qatar Airways doesn’t serve YVR directly — Qatari supporters route through Toronto or a US hub. YVR is also one of the cleanest, most efficiently operated airports in North America.

Guadalajara — GDL. Mexico’s second international airport. No Korean nonstops to GDL — Korean fans heading to Estadio Akron fly into Mexico City (MEX) and connect on Aeromexico domestically to GDL, or route through a US hub. United flies IAH–GDL, which is my home airport to today’s venue in one hop.
