The Vibe

What Vancouver actually feels like on the ground.

City Vibe

Vancouver is one of the genuinely great cities in the world — mountains on one side, ocean on the other, walkable downtown, exceptional food, and a mild summer climate that will be a relief for fans traveling from the heat of Houston or Miami. BC Place is in the heart of downtown, SkyTrain-connected, and surrounded by one of the most vibrant urban cores in Canada. The Canadian fan base here is passionate and the two Canada home matches (Jun 18 and Jun 24) will create an atmosphere unlike anything else in the tournament. The city’s enormous Asian community means that matches featuring Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and China draw intense local interest. This is Canada’s most international city and it shows — during the World Cup every fan base will feel at home here. Note for US-based nonrevs: Vancouver requires a passport book for air travel and a NEXUS card or passport for the land border crossing from Seattle.

Entry Requirements

Vancouver is in Canada — different entry requirements depending on your nationality and how you’re traveling.

🇺🇸
US Citizens
No Visa · No eTA Required
No visa or eTA required for tourism visits. A valid US passport book is required for air travel — passport cards are not accepted for flights into Canada. For the land border crossing from Seattle (I-5 northbound to Peace Arch or Pacific Highway), a passport book, passport card, or NEXUS card is accepted. NEXUS holders get dedicated lanes at both the border and YVR airport. No customs declaration required in advance.
🇬🇧🇦🇺🇳🇿🇯🇵
UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan & Most EU
eTA Required
No visa needed but an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required before flying. CAD $7, linked to your passport, usually approved within minutes at canada.ca. Valid 5 years. Airlines verify at check-in. Land crossings from the US do not require an eTA.
🌍
Other Nationalities
Visa May Be Required
Many nationalities require a Canadian visitor visa applied for in advance. Some nationals holding a valid US visa may qualify for an eTA instead — verify with IRCC (canada.ca/immigration) before booking. Apply as early as possible for a World Cup trip.
✈️
All Travelers — Key Documents
Checklist
Valid passport book (6 months recommended), eTA if required (verified at check-in), return or onward ticket, proof of sufficient funds. NEXUS card holders use dedicated airport processing lanes at YVR — significant time saver on busy match days. Non-US citizens transiting through the US to reach Vancouver by land need to comply with US entry requirements as well.
Nonrev note: US-based nonrevs need a passport book for air travel to Vancouver. Air Canada, WestJet, and most major US carriers have strong ZED bilateral coverage for Canada — confirm your ticketing authority specifically includes YVR before booking. For the land border crossing from Seattle, NEXUS card is the most efficient option for frequent crossers.

Airport Info

One major airport directly serving Vancouver, two small Canadian regionals, plus Seattle as a major ground transfer option 145 miles south.

Primary Airport

YVR is Air Canada’s Pacific hub and one of the best-connected airports in Canada. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs directly from the airport to downtown Vancouver and one transfer from BC Place.

YVRVancouver International Airport12 km to BC Place · Canada Line SkyTrain ~25 min to WaterfrontAir Canada’s Pacific hub and Canada’s second-busiest airport. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from YVR’s International and Domestic terminals directly to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver (~25 min, CAD $4–9 depending on zone). From Waterfront, take the Expo Line one stop east to Main Street–Science World Station (NOT Stadium-Chinatown, which is closed on match days) — a short walk to BC Place. Total YVR to stadium: approximately 35–40 min. Buy a Compass Card at the airport for seamless transit.Airlines serving YVR: Aeromexico (AM), Air Canada (AC), Air China (CA), Air France (AF), Air India (AI), Air New Zealand (NZ), Air North (4N), Alaska Airlines (AS), American Airlines (AA), ANA (NH), British Airways (BA), Cathay Pacific (CX), Central Mountain Air (9M), China Airlines (CI), China Eastern (MU), China Southern (CZ), Condor (DE), Delta Air Lines (DL), Edelweiss Air (WK), EVA Air (BR), Fiji Airways (FJ), Flair Airlines (F8), Hainan Airlines (HU), Harbour Air (YB), Hong Kong Airlines (HX), Icelandair (FI), JAL (JL), JetBlue (B6), KLM (KL), Korean Air (KE), Lufthansa (LH), Pacific Coastal Airlines (8P), Philippine Airlines (PR), Porter Airlines (PD), Qantas (QF), Sichuan Airlines (3U), Starlux Airlines (JX), Sun Country Airlines (SY), T’way Air (TW), Turkish Airlines (TK), United Airlines (UA), WestJet (WS), Xiamen Air (MF).

Canadian Alternate Airports

Two small regional airports within 40 miles of Vancouver. Carrier selection is very limited — only worth checking if you have a specific routing on the airlines listed.

YXXAbbotsford International Airport~70 km east of Vancouver · ~60 min by carFlair Airlines and WestJet serve YXX with domestic routes. Drive west on Highway 1 to Vancouver or take BC Transit to Abbotsford and then rideshare. No direct rail. Only worth checking if you’re routing on Flair or WestJet from a western Canada city and YVR is showing impossible.Airlines serving YXX: Flair Airlines (F8), WestJet (WS).
YCDNanaimo Airport (Vancouver Island)~110 km via ferry · ~2 hrs including BC Ferries crossingAir Canada, Pacific Coastal Airlines, and WestJet serve YCD on Vancouver Island. Getting to Vancouver requires a BC Ferries crossing from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay (~1h 35min) then drive or transit into the city. A genuine last resort — the ferry adds significant time and cost. Only viable if you have no other routing options into YVR or YXX.Airlines serving YCD: Air Canada (AC), Pacific Coastal Airlines (8P), WestJet (WS).

US Ground Transfer Options — Drive or Bus Across the Border

Seattle-Tacoma is 230 km south and the most powerful ground transfer option for any World Cup city in this guide. SEA has 37 carriers including major international routes. Cross the border at Peace Arch (I-5) or Pacific Highway — allow 30–90 min for border crossing depending on time of day and match schedule.

SEASeattle-Tacoma International Airport~230 km · ~2.5–3 hrs to Vancouver via I-5 and border crossingAlaska’s hub and a major international gateway. By car: I-5 north, cross at Peace Arch (Surrey/Blaine) or Pacific Highway border crossings, continue north on Highway 99 or 1 into Vancouver. Budget 2.5 hrs in light traffic; 3.5–4 hrs on Canada match day weekends when the border backs up significantly. Bolt Bus and FlixBus both run Seattle to Vancouver with border stop — approximately 3.5–4 hrs total, from ~$25 USD. Note: Seattle is also a World Cup host city — check SEA loads carefully around its own match days.Airlines serving SEA: Aer Lingus (EI), Aeromexico (AM), Air Canada (AC), Air France (AF), Alaska Airlines (AS), ANA (NH), Asiana Airlines (OZ), British Airways (BA), Cathay Pacific (CX), China Airlines (CI), Condor (DE), Delta Air Lines (DL), Edelweiss Air (WK), Emirates (EK), EVA Air (BR), Finnair (AY), Frontier Airlines (F9), Hainan Airlines (HU), Hawaiian Airlines (HA), Icelandair (FI), JAL (JL), JetBlue (B6), Korean Air (KE), Lufthansa (LH), Philippine Airlines (PR), Qatar Airways (QR), SAS (SK), Singapore Airlines (SQ), Starlux Airlines (JX), Sun Country Airlines (SY), Turkish Airlines (TK), United Airlines (UA), Virgin Atlantic (VS), Volaris (Y4), WestJet (WS).
BLIBellingham International Airport~90 km to Vancouver · ~75 min by carAlaska Airlines and Allegiant serve BLI — limited but worth checking if you’re on AS or G4. Located just south of the Canadian border in Bellingham, WA. Drive north on I-5 to the border, then Highway 99 to Vancouver. No direct bus to Vancouver — car or rideshare required. A simpler border crossing than Seattle given the shorter queue times at Peace Arch.Airlines serving BLI: Alaska Airlines (AS), Allegiant Air (G4).
PAEPaine Field (Everett)~270 km to Vancouver · ~3 hrs by car via borderAlaska Airlines only. Located north of Seattle in Everett, WA — slightly closer to the border than SEA. Drive north on I-5 to Peace Arch. Similar routing to SEA but fewer carriers. Worth checking if SEA loads are impossible on Alaska and you need another AS option in the area.Airlines serving PAE: Alaska Airlines (AS).
Nonrev strategy: YVR first — Air Canada’s Pacific hub with the widest carrier mix in western Canada. For Canada home matches (Jun 18, Jun 24), treat the 2–3 days before each as standby no-go into YVR and position earlier. SEA is the strongest contingency — 37 carriers including all major US airlines and a good Pacific carrier mix. The land border crossing adds time but a confirmed bus ticket from Seattle to Vancouver is an insurable transportation leg. YXX is worth a quick check if you’re on WestJet or Flair from a western Canada origin.

Getting to BC Place

SkyTrain is the move. BC Place is downtown Vancouver — the transit connection from YVR is one of the best of any World Cup venue.

🚇SkyTrain — Canada Line + Expo LineFrom YVR: Canada Line to Waterfront Station (~25 min, CAD $4–9). At Waterfront, transfer to Expo Line eastbound. Exit at Main Street–Science World Station — walk south to BC Place (~8 min). This is the correct station on all match days. Buy a Compass Card at the airport — single fares or day passes available at all stations.
⚠️Stadium-Chinatown Station — CLOSED Match DaysStadium-Chinatown Station is the closest SkyTrain stop to BC Place but is closed to fans on all match days. Do not exit here — you will be directed back on the train. Use Main Street–Science World Station (one stop east) and walk back to the stadium. Most travel guides get this wrong. The MBTA has confirmed this closure for all 7 matches.
🚗Rideshare & TaxiBC Place is at 777 Pacific Blvd in downtown Vancouver — easily accessible by rideshare from anywhere in the city. On Canada match days, downtown Vancouver will be gridlocked. SkyTrain is faster. Pre-book return rides before kickoff; post-game rideshare demand will be extreme on Canada match nights.
🚶Walking from DowntownBC Place is walkable from Yaletown, False Creek, and the Granville Street corridor — 10–20 min from most downtown hotels. On a dry summer evening, walking to or from the stadium along the False Creek seawall is one of the best ways to experience the city. Vancouver summers are mild and dry — outdoor walking is very pleasant in June and July.
🏟️Fan Festival — Hastings Park (PNE)The official FIFA Fan Festival runs June 11–July 19 at the PNE fairgrounds in Hastings Park, east of downtown. Take the SkyTrain Millennium Line to Hastings Park/Exhibition Station or bus from downtown. Free general admission; live match screenings at the PNE Amphitheatre are first-come, first-served with premium seating available.
🚌From Seattle — Bolt Bus / FlixBusBolt Bus and FlixBus both run Seattle to Vancouver with a border stop included in the journey (~3.5–4 hrs, from ~$25 USD). Arrive at Vancouver Pacific Central Station (Main Street area) — a short SkyTrain ride or walk to BC Place. A confirmed bus ticket is an insurable transportation leg — see the travel insurance section.

5 Things To Do in Vancouver

Between matches — Vancouver is one of the most naturally spectacular cities on the planet.

1Stanley Park1,000 acres of rainforest at the edge of downtown, accessible by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage. The seawall loop around the park is 8.8 km with ocean and mountain views the entire way. Rent a bike at the park entrance. On a clear day — and Vancouver in summer is frequently clear — the views of the North Shore mountains across the water are extraordinary.
2Granville Island Public MarketA working public market under the Granville Street Bridge — local produce, artisan food, fresh seafood, craft beer, and a genuinely excellent food court. The False Creek ferry (tiny blue boat) runs from downtown to the island for $5 CAD. A 10-minute ride that feels nothing like a World Cup trip. Go for the salmon and the cheese.
3Gastown & ChinatownGastown is Vancouver’s historic neighborhood — cobblestones, a famous steam clock, and some of the best restaurants in the city on Water Street and Carrall Street. Chinatown next door is the third-largest in North America — the night market on summer weekends is worth the visit. Both neighborhoods are a 10-minute walk from BC Place.
4Grouse Mountain or Capilano Suspension BridgeThe North Shore mountains are 20 minutes from downtown by SkyTrain and SeaBus. Capilano Suspension Bridge is the most-visited attraction in Vancouver — a 140-metre suspension bridge 70 metres above the Capilano River. Grouse Mountain has a gondola to 1,100m with panoramic city views. Go on a non-match day and allow a half day.
5Richmond Night MarketThe largest night market in North America runs May–October in Richmond, just south of YVR. Over 100 food stalls serving Asian street food — Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese — all under one roof with live entertainment. Take the Canada Line to Aberdeen Station. A non-match evening essential for food-focused travelers.

Flight Load Analysis

What to expect flying standby into YVR during the World Cup.

Canada Match Days (Jun 18, 24)Extremely HeavyCanada’s home matches will pack every flight into YVR 3–4 days ahead. Position by Jun 15 for the Jun 18 match and Jun 21 for Jun 24.
Australia / NZ Match DaysVery HeavyAustralia and New Zealand traveling fan bases are among the most enthusiastic in world football. Pacific carrier loads will spike significantly.
R16 Week (Jul 5–7)Very HeavyKnockout demand. Treat Jul 5–7 as very difficult standby. SEA + border crossing is your best contingency.
Between Match DaysNormal–GoodYVR loads return to normal between match weeks. Non-match Tuesdays and Wednesdays are your best positioning windows from US hubs.

Travel Insurance

International travel to Canada — and why a confirmed bus ticket from Seattle matters.

The nonrev reality on travel insurance: If you’re flying standby and don’t get a seat, travel insurance won’t cover your prepaid hotel or other costs. Not clearing a standby flight isn’t a covered loss — it’s the nature of nonrev travel. Coverage only applies if you had a confirmed seat on a flight and something went wrong with that confirmed flight (cancellation, significant delay, medical emergency).

Where it does help: If your confirmed flight is cancelled, or a covered medical event prevents you from traveling, trip cancellation and interruption coverage protects your prepaid, non-refundable costs. And here’s the Vancouver-specific angle: if you buy a confirmed Bolt Bus or FlixBus ticket from Seattle to Vancouver, that’s an insurable transportation leg. If that bus is cancelled or significantly delayed due to a covered event, your downstream hotel and other costs are protectable. Canada’s healthcare system doesn’t cover foreign visitors — emergency medical coverage is worth having for any international trip.
