The Country
How to get to Uzbekistan starts with knowing what you’re flying toward: a landlocked nation of around 37 million people at the geographic core of Central Asia, sharing borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. For centuries, Uzbekistan’s cities — Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva — were among the most important on Earth, sitting at the crossroads of the Silk Road trade routes connecting China to the Mediterranean. After Soviet-era isolation and a slow post-independence opening, the country has rapidly reoriented toward tourism since 2017: arrivals grew from roughly 1 million in 2016 to 8 million in 2024, airports in Tashkent and Samarkand have been rebuilt, and visa requirements have been steadily relaxed. US citizens can now enter without a visa for up to 30 days. The result is a destination that rewards early movers — genuinely historic, increasingly accessible, and still well short of the crowds that have descended on better-known destinations.

Why Go

Uzbekistan anchors one of the great unsung travel itineraries in the world: three UNESCO-listed cities within a few hours of each other by train or plane, each representing a different peak moment in Silk Road civilization. The tourist infrastructure has improved dramatically since 2017, but the sites themselves have been here for a thousand years.

The Registan, Samarkand
Three 15th–17th century madrasas arranged around a grand central square — UNESCO World Heritage and widely considered one of the most magnificent public spaces on Earth. The blue-tiled domes are the signature image of Uzbekistan.
Bukhara’s Medieval Old City
UNESCO World Heritage and a New York Times “52 Places to Go in 2025” selection. The historic centre has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years and is one of the best-preserved Islamic cities in the world, with over 140 historic monuments still standing.
Ichan Kala, Khiva
The walled inner city of Khiva — UNESCO World Heritage and named the Islamic World Tourist Capital in 2024. One of the most intact medieval cities on Earth, entered through monumental gates that have stood for centuries.
Seven UNESCO Sites
More UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other Central Asian country — including Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Timur (Tamerlane), the 14th-century conqueror whose court made Samarkand the cultural capital of the known world.

Smaller domestic airports also serve Fergana (FEG), Namangan (NMA), Andijan (AZN), Karshi (KSQ), Termez (TMJ), and Navoi (NVI) — all connected through Tashkent via domestic services. The high-speed Afrosiyob train also links Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara in 2–3 hours and is worth considering for the Silk Road corridor.

How to Get to Uzbekistan From North America

✅ US Citizens — Visa Free Since January 1, 2026

By presidential decree, US citizens may enter Uzbekistan without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. No e-visa or advance application needed. Always verify current entry requirements at iatatravelcentre.com before travel.

One nonstop from North America, four airports reachable by connecting. Uzbekistan Airways flies JFK–Tashkent direct. For every other North American city — and for travelers wanting to fly into Samarkand, Bukhara, or Khiva — the connection game runs through Istanbul, Dubai, or the Gulf. Turkish Airlines is the most powerful tool here: they fly direct to all four Uzbek gateway airports from Istanbul (IST).

Where Else You Can Go From Uzbekistan

Tashkent is a surprisingly deep international hub — Uzbekistan Airways operates a wide-reaching network across Europe, Asia, and South Asia, while Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, and Seoul connect through the Gulf and East Asia corridors. The Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva are also connected to Istanbul and the Gulf directly, meaning you can enter and exit through different cities on the same trip.

❓

Common Questions

Is there a nonstop flight from the US to Uzbekistan?

Yes — Uzbekistan Airways (HY) flies nonstop from New York-JFK to Tashkent (TAS). It’s the only nonstop service from North America to any Uzbek airport. Travelers from other US cities will need to connect, most commonly through Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, which has the most comprehensive Uzbekistan network of any carrier — flying nonstop into Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Urgench.

Do Americans need a visa for Uzbekistan?

No. Since January 1, 2026, US citizens can enter Uzbekistan without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. No e-visa or advance application is required — just a valid passport. Canada, Australia, the EU, and many other nationalities have had visa-free access for longer; check iatatravelcentre.com for the current status of your specific passport.
