United Airlines Unveils “United Relax Row”: The First North American Economy Couch

In the airline industry, where the economy class cabins often feel like they are shrinking, United Airlines just made an upgrade. On March 24, 2026, the carrier announced it is bringing a “couch” to the sky—a move that marks the first time a North American airline has offered a true lie-flat experience for the main cabin.

The new seat experience is called the United Relax Row. It is directly inspired by (and licensed from) its Star Alliance partner, Air New Zealand, which pioneered the concept years ago under the name Skycouch™.

What is the United Relax Row?

The United Relax Row consists of three economy class seats equipped with specially designed leg rests. After takeoff, these leg rests can be raised to a 90-degree angle, effectively filling the gap between your seat and the seat in front of you. This creates a flat, couch-like surface that spans the width of all three seats.

The Details

  • Launch Date: Expected to debut in 2027.
  • The Fleet: It will be rolled out on more than 200 widebody aircraft, including all Boeing 787 Dreamliners and a significant number of the Boeing 777 fleet, by 2030.
  • The Experience: When you book a Relax Row, you aren’t just getting the seats; you get a “couch kit” that includes a custom-fitted mattress pad (to smooth out the seat gaps), a dedicated blanket, and two extra pillows.
  • Location: These rows will typically be located at the front of the economy cabin, directly behind the United Premium Plus section.

The Pioneer: Air New Zealand Skycouch™

Air New Zealand is the “standard bearer” for this technology. Launched in 2011, the Skycouch™ was designed to give families and couples a way to sleep on ultra-long-haul flights (like Auckland to Houston or New York) without paying for Business Premier.

While United’s version is nearly identical, Air New Zealand also offers a variation called Economy Stretch, which provides a standard seat with a massive 35-inch pitch for those who just want legroom rather than a bed.

Other Airlines Offering the “Couch” Experience

Airline Feature Name Aircraft Best For
Air New Zealand Skycouch™ 777-300ER, 787-9 Families & Solo travelers
ANA ANA COUCHii Airbus A380 Hawaii routes (Narita–Honolulu)
Lufthansa Sleeper’s Row 747-8, A350 Solo travelers (includes a topper & pillow)
Vietnam Airlines Sky Sofa 787, A350 Select routes (e.g., San Francisco/London)

Insight: The “Neighbor-Free” Alternative

While the “couch” is a premium way to sleep in economy, many airlines offer a different way to guarantee space: the Neighbor-Free Seat. I did a deep dive into this a couple of years ago, explaining how you can officially buy or bid for that empty seat next to you to ensure you aren’t squeezed in.

Note on Azul Brazilian Airlines: You may remember Azul offering a similar “SkySofa” on their Airbus A330 fleet. While this was a popular feature for South American long-haul travel, it has largely been phased out as the airline restructured its fleet and simplified its international product offerings in early 2026.

How Do You Book It?

Typically, these features aren’t a separate “class” of service like Premium Economy. Instead, they are an add-on to a standard economy ticket.

  1. Solo Travelers: You usually pay extra to “buy out” the other two seats in your row and unlock the couch functionality.
  2. Couples: You pay a smaller fee to ensure the third seat stays empty.
  3. Families: If you are three people (e.g., two adults and one child), you can often book the row at the standard fare plus a small flat fee for the “couch kit” amenities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Relax Row during takeoff and landing?

No. For safety reasons, the leg rests must be in the retracted position during taxi, takeoff, and landing. You can deploy the couch once the seatbelt sign is turned off at cruising altitude.

Do I have to share the row with a stranger?

No. When you book a Relax Row, you are essentially paying for the entire block of three seats. No third party will be seated in your row.

Is the bedding included?

Yes. United includes a “couch kit” with every booking, which features a custom-fitted mattress pad, a plush blanket, and extra pillows.

What happened to Azul’s SkySofa?

Azul previously offered the SkySofa on their A330 fleet, but the product is no longer widely available following the airline’s recent fleet optimization and service restructuring.
