Hotel Review · Dublin, Ireland

Dublin wasn’t a leisure trip this time — I was in town for a conference. But where I lay my head still matters, and the Clayton Hotel Burlington Road in Ballsbridge delivered in ways I didn’t expect. Especially at breakfast. But I’ll get to that.

How To Get To Dublin

By Air. Dublin Airport (DUB) is the main gateway, served by a wide range of airlines including Aer Lingus (its their home), Ryanair (also their home), American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, British Airways, Emirates, and many others. Transatlantic nonstops from the US and Canada are plentiful — New York, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, and more. Check schedules on Passrider for routes and timing.

✈️ Tip for Airline Employees: Dublin is a major hub for Aer Lingus (EI), part of the IAG family (oneworld). US preclearance is available at DUB — you clear US Customs and Border Protection before departure, arriving stateside as a domestic passenger. Check your loads early, particularly in summer and over bank holiday weekends when flights fill fast. Check schedules on Passrider and use the Flight Loads application to request loads.

Getting From Dublin Airport (DUB) to the Clayton Hotel Burlington Road

The hotel is on Leeson Street Upper in Dublin 4 — approximately 7 miles (12 km) from Dublin Airport, with a journey time of around 30 minutes depending on traffic.

  • Dublin Express (Recommended — Inbound): Express coach service from the airport to multiple city centre stops. Tickets from around €8–9 one-way when booked online at dublinexpress.ie — show the driver your QR code. Important: Dublin Express runs multiple routes (782, 784) that go to different parts of the city — always ask at the airport which service you need. The 784 route is most useful for Ballsbridge and the south city.
  • Aircoach (Recommended — Return to Airport): Stops just down the road from the Clayton and runs directly to DUB. Route 700 operates up to every 15 minutes. Book online at aircoach.ie for discounted fares. Note: Leap Cards are not accepted on Aircoach or Dublin Express, and you must put your hand out to stop the bus, or you will miss it! Don’t ask me how I know :-).
  • Taxi: Available at the airport rank. Fares to Ballsbridge typically run €35–40. Most accept cards, but confirm before getting in.
  • Luas Tram: The Charlemont stop is approximately a 16-minute walk from the hotel — a solid option once you’re in the city centre. It a very beautiful and picturesque area, so perfect for walking even at night.

The Neighborhood

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 / 5

Ballsbridge is one of Dublin’s most pleasant residential neighborhoods — leafy, quiet, and genuinely suburban in feel. You won’t find yourself in the thick of the tourist action here, and that’s exactly the point. The area has its own cafés, restaurants, and pubs within easy reach, and the Aviva Stadium is not far away if sport is on the agenda. The one caveat: if you’re after the full Dublin experience — Temple Bar, Grafton Street, Trinity College, the Guinness Storehouse — you’ll need to travel. That said, it’s a straightforward 20–30 minute walk into the city centre, and the bus stop is right outside the hotel. Just setting your expectations accordingly.

The Room

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 / 5

Comfortable and well-appointed. The bed is comfy — one of those rooms where you actually sleep well, which matters more than people admit when you’re traveling. The room took a while to warm up after I turned up the thermostat. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if you’re arriving on a cold February evening (and Dublin in February is cold). I asked the staff for a duvet to supplement the sheet — they brought one without fuss, and it was perfect after that.

I don’t know why hotels use these very thin sheets and make you ask for a duvet or blanket. Cost savings, I guess. Sadly, most do it these days.

Good WiFi throughout. The room also includes a work desk, which is useful if you’re there for business. I didn’t spend enough time in the room to use it though :-). I did watch some TV, though, as I unwound after tours and meetings.

There is the usual safe; do you use those? And surprisingly, a refrigerator and a tea maker with tea too! And I did use the fridge as I went to the grocery store to buy some stuff for late-night snacks and dinner. I try not to eat out when I travel as it’s really expensive. Buying items at the grocery store is a winner. Do you do that? Oh, make sure you take a bag with you; otherwise, you’ll have to pay for one. In Germany, it’s common to see people with food items in their hands on the streets when you are in the smaller neighborhoods.

The Food & Restaurant — The Sussex Breakfast Room

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
5 / 5

Let me be clear :-): the breakfast at the Clayton Burlington Road is exceptional. The spread is incredibly generous — there’s a real risk of overeating before you’ve even started your day. It’s a full Irish breakfast situation: hot options, cold options, fresh items, the works. The quality is high and it’s consistently delivered. If I’m recommending this hotel to anyone, I mention breakfast first. The hotel also has a bar (the B Bar) with a nice atmosphere, a lobby lounge with a fireplace, and a second restaurant — though I didn’t use that during my stay.

So, fun story: one morning, I came down for breakfast; I’m usually the first one there, but today, at opening, there were maybe 10 or so people, which is unusual for me. I put my bread in the toaster and waited as I did the previous mornings. I walked away to get some more food, came back, and no toasted bread. I literally walked around and looked if someone had taken my toast, lol.

So of course, I put another two in the same thing happened while I watched and waited. So I started to investigate. Apparently, the back of the toaster is open, and the bread just fell out! All four pieces were on the ground behind the toaster. I called the Maître d’ over and showed him, and he checked it out and fixed it all. So watch for the toast-stealing toaster.

Staff & Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
5 / 5

From check-in (3p check-in) to check-out (noon checkout), the staff was very attentive and genuinely warm. The breakfast team deserves a specific shoutout — they were on it every morning without being intrusive. The server asked me what I wanted to drink; I said, “Some tea, please.” He asked what kind and then named off a bunch. I said ginger, he paused, and said I’ll be back. Moments later, he came with a pot of ginger tea, which I thanked him for and devoured. I love ginger tea! The same morning, the exact same scenario with a different server played out.

That kind of consistent, cheerful service at the start of your day sets the tone for the rest of your day. The lady who cleaned my room handled my duvet request without a second thought. She found two of her colleagues, and one brought the duvet a few moments later. Irish hospitality has a reputation, and the Clayton Burlington Road earns it.

Oh, at first when I asked for a duvet I must have confused the lady who makes up the rooms, as she went into the closet and brought out a robe, which I gladly accepted, but mentioned that I was talking about a duvet. I love robes. The nicer hotels used to have them in the rooms, but these days you have to request one. If you stay at the Clayton, request one!

Amenities

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 / 5

The hotel has a well-equipped fitness centre (I didn’t use it, but it’s there), free WiFi throughout, a coffee shop, three bars, a terrace, and significant conference and meeting facilities — it’s actually the largest conference hotel in Dublin, with space for up to 1,200 delegates. For regular travelers, the key amenities are covered comfortably. No iron surcharge either — which, after my Tobago experience, I notice and appreciate.

Value

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 / 5

My stay was complimentary as part of a conference, but I checked the rates out of habit — and they’re reasonable for a 4-star property in a good Dublin neighborhood. You’re not paying central-Dublin prices for a noisy location. The quality-to-cost ratio is solid. Breakfast is an extra $30, so if you take this option, have a hearty one that will last you until dinnertime.

The Verdict

⭐⭐⭐⭐  4 / 5

The Clayton Hotel Burlington Road is a comfortable, well-run hotel in one of Dublin’s nicest residential neighborhoods, with an outstanding breakfast and genuinely good staff. It’s not in the thick of the city, but the bus is right outside, and the walk is manageable. For a business trip, conference stay, or a nonrev layover where you want somewhere calm and well-run over a central-but-chaotic tourist hotel — this delivers.

Who is this for? Business travelers, conference attendees, nonrev couples or solo travelers who want a reliable, comfortable base in Dublin without the noise of the city centre. If you need to be steps from Temple Bar, look elsewhere. If you want a great night’s sleep, a breakfast that sets you up properly, and staff who actually care — this is the spot.

Getting Around Dublin from Ballsbridge

Clayton’s location is well served by public transport and other ground transportation. Multiple bus routes stop right outside the hotel. The Charlemont Luas stop is approximately a 16-minute walk, connecting you across the city. The city centre is about a 20–30 minute walk — pleasant on a dry day, less so in February rain. Taxis and rideshare are widely available throughout the city.
