Welcome To Rome, Italy (CIA, FCO)

Dan Palatine - Rome, Italy

Dan Palatine – Rome, Italy

Rome, one of my favorite European cities. A bit complex to navigate, but you get used to it. It is the home of the Pope, well kind of as the Pope lives in Vatican City in the Vatican which is actually it’s own country.

Here are some things about the city you may find helpful on your next visit.

Airport Information

The city is served by two airports. The one that most know is Rome-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci (FCO). The other one is lesser known, Rome-Ciampino Giovan Battista Pastine (CIA). The latter is used by low cost carriers.

And if you’re stuck in Europe and trying to get back home to North American, this article is for you.

Airport To The City

Check the details on this page  https://www.turismoroma.it/en/page/plane. I’ve found that the most useful way is to either take the train into Rome-Termini station or take the bus. As much as I love trains, I found the bus the easiest way.

Airport Hotels

There are two airport hotels on the airport property itself. I’ve actually stayed at the Hilton there once when I was trying to make it back home many years ago. The other hotels are in the nearby Fiumicino area; accessible by hotel shuttle bus or other shuttle buses..

Rome-Ciampino Giovan Battista Pastine (CIA)

The other airport in Rome is Rome–Ciampino Airport (CIA). It’s much smaller and closer to the city than Fiumicino (FCO).

Trains Serving The City

There are many train services serving the city of Rome from various parts of Italy and Europe:

Plus you can use Eurail to make bookings.

Buses Serving The City

There are several bus companies that serves Rome. Here are some of them:

Currency

The currency of Italy is the Euro (EUR). I recommend getting money at an ATM. They won’t take USD for purchases. Use an ATM as opposed to currency exchange places as the ATM exchange rate is much better. Also, ensure that your credit card transactions are paid for in Euros as opposed to your local currency as the rates are better.

Language

Italian, however English is also spoken.

Visa Information

No visa is required for U.S. citizens, but you must have two blank pages available for entry. Other citizens should check with the Italian consulate/embassy in your region for specifics. Alternatively, you can use the IATA Web site for visa/health requirements.

Things To Do In Rome

There are many things to do in the Eternal City. here are just a few. In addition, you should take some time to visit, Fiumicino. This is the city in which the airport is located. There are great places to eat, a beach and you get the Italian hospitality and the pace is much sloer. You can take a bus from the Leonardo da Vinci Airport to the city.

Places To Eat and Drink

Rome have tons of places to dine. Follow the crowds and your nose. Try pizza as it’s different than in the U.S. as well as gelato ice cream and also some true Italian pasta and also Tortellini (shown below).

Where To Stay In Rome (Accommodations)

Rome is a very expensive city when it comes to hotels as it’s usually so busy. You can find both chain properties as well as locally branded ones. You can use his map to find hotels.
