Welcome to my World Cup 2026 travel guide — a new one every match day, with three aviation facts about each country on the pitch. The tournament kicked off today, June 11, 2026, and whether you’re chasing matches or just chasing destinations, here’s how these four countries connect to the sky.
The tournament opened June 11, 2026 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City with Mexico vs. South Africa, followed tonight by South Korea vs. Czechia in Guadalajara. Four countries, four very different aviation stories. And since this World Cup is hosted across the US, Canada, and Mexico, I’m covering how to reach each country from all three. Let’s go.
🇲🇽 Mexico
Aeroméxico, a SkyTeam member flying out of Mexico City (MEX). If you’re heading to a match in Mexico City, Guadalajara, or Monterrey, there’s a good chance you’re on their metal — or on Volaris or Viva, the two big low-cost carriers that dominate domestic routes.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico
This is one of the easiest international hops in North America. Every major US carrier — Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, United — serves Mexico, and from Canada, Air Canada and WestJet both fly to Mexican cities, with Aeroméxico flying north to Canada as well. From hubs like Houston and Dallas, Mexico City is barely a two-hour flight.
Mexico City actually has two airports now. The one everyone knows, Benito Juárez (MEX) sits close to the city — and to Estadio Azteca — while the newer Felipe Ángeles (NLU) opened north of town in 2022. Check which one your ticket says before you book that hotel.
🇿🇦 South Africa
South African Airways (SAA) — and it’s a comeback story. SAA stopped flying during a financial restructuring in 2020 and relaunched in 2021 as a leaner airline. It’s slowly rebuilding its network from Johannesburg.
Only two airlines on the entire continent fly nonstop to South Africa, and both are American — United (from Newark to Johannesburg and Cape Town, plus Washington Dulles to Cape Town) and Delta (from Atlanta to both Johannesburg and Cape Town). There are no nonstops from Canada or Mexico — travelers from Toronto, Vancouver, or Mexico City connect through a US gateway or via European and Middle Eastern hubs like London, Amsterdam, or Doha. These are among the longest flights in the world — Atlanta to Johannesburg, which I’ve taken, runs for around 16+ hours.
Cape Town. Table Mountain rising behind the city is one of the great landing views in commercial aviation — grab a window seat on the left side as you come in from the north and thank me later. Don’t go during cricket season as flights are full.
🇰🇷 South Korea
Korean Air — and here’s a fact with a clock on it. Korean Air acquired Asiana Airlines, and the Asiana brand officially disappears on December 17, 2026. That means this World Cup is the last one where you can fly Asiana. If their business class has been on your list, this is the year. I’ve flown Asiana from the US West Coast to Seoul and also Korean on several routes. Both great airlines.
Seoul-Incheon (ICN) is one of Asia’s best-connected gateways, with nonstops from more than a dozen US airports. Korean Air and Asiana carry most of the traffic, Delta flies several routes through its joint venture with Korean Air, and hybrid carrier Air Premia has been adding US cities fast. From Canada, Air Canada offers nonstop flights from Toronto and Vancouver, and Korean Air also serves Toronto. And here’s the host-country twist: Aeroméxico connects Mexico City to Seoul (with a stop in Monterrey on the way out), and Korean Air serves the Mexico City market as well — so Korea is one of the few Day 1 opponents with a direct air link to Mexico itself.
Incheon is consistently ranked among the best airports on Earth — with cultural performances, a movie theater, gardens, and free transit tours of Seoul for long layovers. It’s one of the few airports where a 10-hour connection is a feature, not a punishment.

🇨🇿 Czechia
Trick question — there isn’t one. CSA Czech Airlines, one of the oldest airlines in the world (founded in 1923), ceased operations in October 2024. Its operations were absorbed by Smartwings, which is now the country’s main carrier. Czechia is one of the few European countries competing in this World Cup without a flag carrier. I need to fly Smartwings.

Until recently, Delta’s seasonal JFK–Prague flight was the only US nonstop to Czechia. That changed this summer — American Airlines returned to Prague from Philadelphia in May 2026 after an eight-year absence. From Canada, Air Canada flies Toronto–Prague nonstop and is adding capacity on the route this summer. From Mexico, there’s no nonstop — you’ll connect through a European hub like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Paris.
Prague’s Václav Havel Airport is named after the playwright-turned-president — and the city itself is one of Europe’s most walkable capitals. Old Town Square to Prague Castle is a morning well spent before any match watch party.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which airlines fly from the US to Mexico City?
Every major US carrier serves Mexico City, including American, United, and Delta, alongside Mexican carriers Aeroméxico, Volaris, and Viva. From Houston or Dallas, the flight is roughly two hours.
Does Mexico City have more than one airport?
Yes — two. Benito Juárez International (MEX) is the long-established airport close to the city center, while Felipe Ángeles International (NLU) opened in 2022 north of the city. Most international flights still use MEX, but always check your ticket.
Which US airlines fly nonstop to South Africa?
Only two: United (Newark to Johannesburg, Newark and Washington Dulles to Cape Town) and Delta (Atlanta to Johannesburg and Cape Town). No Canadian or Mexican airline flies nonstop to South Africa.
How long is the flight from the US to South Africa?
Plan on 15–16+ hours nonstop. Atlanta–Johannesburg and the Cape Town routes rank among the longest commercial flights in the world.
What is the national airline of South Korea?
Korean Air, a founding SkyTeam member based at Seoul Incheon (ICN). It acquired Asiana Airlines, and the two are merging into a single carrier.
Is Asiana Airlines going away?
Yes. The Asiana brand is scheduled to disappear on December 17, 2026, when it’s fully merged into Korean Air — making this World Cup the last one you can fly Asiana.
Does Czechia have a national airline?
Not anymore. CSA Czech Airlines, founded in 1923, ceased operations in October 2024. Smartwings absorbed its operations and is now the country’s main carrier.
Which airlines fly nonstop from North America to Prague?
Delta (seasonal from New York JFK), American (from Philadelphia, returning in May 2026), and Air Canada (from Toronto). From Mexico, you’ll need to connect through a European hub.
